PROJECT AIMS

The Children´s Rights Erasmus Academic Network (CREAN) is a network of universities offering higher education in children's rights with the major aim to include further enhancement of the academic field of children's rights studies as an interdisciplinary field of studies. The network is based upon a common belief that childhood is a social, historically changeable phenomenon and that children are social subjects who are to be respected as such, with own views, interests, competences and the right to comprehensive participation. CREAN intends to give more importance to the ways in which rights holders relate to and make use of their rights, and overcome existing constraints. It intends to change the reality of children's legal position in society by linking theory and practice.

NETWORKING

a.      Mediterranenan Network

Considering that children’s rights are not taken into account sufficiently in the Mediterranean political initiatives as the so-called Mediterranean Union, network partners see the need to establish a Mediterranean network on children’s rights to bring them up on the academic and political agendas of Mediterranean countries. The main objective of the network will be to share initiatives and research projects as well as the common methodologies between the university professors and experts, who will be part of the network. The Mediterranean network would be an excellent platform to stay in touch and establish long-lasting contacts beyond the end of the TEMPUS-project in 2013 including other countries in the region in and outside Europe. This group will meet in Barcelona on September 26th and 27th, just after the Children´s Rights Research: From Theory to Practice conference takes place.
 
b.      Nordic Network

The regional Nordic Network in Children Rights will gather researchers (academics), members from NGOs and other educators who are closely related to childhood phenomena explorations and both have a great interest in implementing children rights in the context of childhood studies as well as to seek for the possible ways in education to make children’s psychosocial development more favourable in the schools and other micro/macro environments.  It can be seen as a needed cooperative task for researchers to offer joint and comparative scientific knowledge on those issues, taking into account cultural diversity and common interests of the region.
The main objective of the network will be to share initiatives and research projects as well as the common methodologies between the university professors and experts, who will be part of the network. The new network will consist of members from Sweden, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Estonia, Norway and Poland. This group will meet in Madrid on September 26th, just after the Children´s Rights Research: From Theory to Practice conference takes place.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Project duration: 01-10-2012 – 30-09-2015

The Science for Prevention Academic Network (SPAN) has been awarded a large grant (€595,000) by  the European Commission Lifelong Learning programme (LLP) to support the establishment of a network of prevention scientists and educators across Europe. The project will:

  • improve the integration of prevention science in the higher education sector and improve staff and student skill mobility across Europe;

  • develop and share best practice in the prevention science education training and workforce and;

  • support the development of innovative ICT based content for prevention science.

SPAN will achieve this by bringing together experts from 32 European institutions across 25 countries to map the prevention science sector, improve education and training, build networks and run workshops with researchers, with a particular focus upon young researchers. In addition the project will develop a quality plan designed to improve the integration of prevention science in higher education across Europe and will provide recommendations on how best to align prevention science with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS).

PROJECT AIMS

  • Improve the integration of Prevention Science degree/quality assurance standards, methods and approaches in the European Higher Education Sector in such a way that improves the quality and increases the volume of staff and student mobility across Europe.
  • Share Best Practice and facilitate the development of innovative practices in Prevention Science education and training.
  • Support the development of innovative ICT-based content, services, pedagogies and practice for lifelong learning in Prevention Science.

PARTICIPATION OF VILNIUS UNIVERSITY

Vilnius University will participate in the following activities:

  • Development of first module of trainings and organization of trainings for faculty members of partner Higher Education Institutions (HEI);
  • Development of frame-curriculum, syllabi and teaching materials for Master programs;
  • Hosting the faculty staff of partner HEIs and introduction free of charge e-resources in teaching process. The main focus will be done on using Moodle Platform in designing and management of courses;
  • Consultation of partner HEIs faculty staff during the development, piloting and implementation of the programs;
  • Presentations on project results as well as will present papers on multilingual and international education;
  • Participation in development of each volume of journal “Bilingual education”, particularly: (a) Defining the topics for the specific volume; (b) Peer review process;
  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of teaching process at the end of each semester and consult targeted HEIs for improvement.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The aim of this project is to renew Sociology (Undergraduate), Sociology and Criminology (Postgraduate) study programmes and also prepare the courses for international students.

Duration of the Project: from November 2011 to January 2014.

UNDERGRADUATE STUDY COURSES OF SOCIOLOGY

The aim of the undergraduate programme in Sociology is to educate specialists provided with up to date knowledge in social theory and methodology, possessing practical skills that could enable them to apply acquired theoretical knowledge in practical fields, equipped with creative abilities of sociological imagination and independent, open, and critical thinking, understanding the norms of sociological professional ethics, able to interpret social events and facts, as well as their sociological work in the broad cultural perspective.

Courses renewed during the implementation of Internalization project:

Social economy  
(4,5 ECTS credits)
The course is aimed at introducing students to the key topics of social economy such as social capital, community development, social investments, social innovations and social entrepreneurs. The course will provide students with knowledge and skills necessary for accomplishment of participatory action research and empowerment of excluded communities.  

Market and Public Opinion Research
(4,5 ECTS credits)
How to set your priority matrix to improve your organization’s client satisfaction? What is media plan and how research data is used to design it? Why do pollsters not always accurate while forecasting election results? What do you need to tell and ask research agency before commissioning research project? How to find relations between two or more latent variables which are not measured directly? These and many other questions will be answered during the Market and Public Opinion Research course.
 
Classical Sociological Theories
(6 ECTS credits)
The purpose of the course is to provide an opportunity and an impulse to study texts of the classics of sociology ("founding fathers") from the first sources. Who is baptized, but did not read the Holy Scripture, is not true Christian. Who calls himself a sociologist, but did not read the classic sociological texts, is a "straw" sociologist. The main attention in the course is paid to the contribution of Alexis de Tocqueville, Karl Marx, Max Weber, Emile Durkheim, Georg Simmel. The classical works of sociology till now are the identity base of sociology as a separate discipline of social science, and their study is the best school of sociological thought.

Sociology of Economics
(3 ECTS credits)
This is a seminar-based course. The broad field of economic sociology focuses on sociological explanations of economic activity. Many early classical economic theorists (ex. Adam Smith and David Ricardo) are not considered to be “sociologists,” but their ideas had a profound impact on early social theorists, such as Karl Marx.
Taking a somewhat historical approach, this course will show students the connection between an economic and sociological perspective on the world. Classical sociological theorists such as - Marx, Weber, and Durkheim - where interested in capitalism’s influence on societies. We will begin to analyze economic sociology where they left off, and discuss the differences between classical economic scholars: how the economic perspective formed against the sociological one, and what they have in common.
The sociological context of economic institutions affects how they develop. Polanyi used the term “embededness” to explain how the economy has become a part of social institutions.  

Sociology of Education
(3 ECTS credits)
This course is aimed at introducing students to sociological theories of education. Taking the course students will analyse current issues of educational system: inequality, changing definition of purpose of education, changing methods of teaching and learning, ideologies behind it, globalization and massification of higher education, its relations to labour market. You will be able to explore some aspects of education yourself, together with your course mates. The students will develop their knowledge and skills how to employ sociological theories in practical work, choose suitable methods for research, analyse and present results of research both in written and spoken form.

Introduction to Criminology
(4,5 ECTS credits)
This course aims to introduce students to a wide range of questions about crime, its control and prevention, drawing on criminological theory, research and practice. The course also covers key concepts, issues and debates in criminology. Students get acquainted with definition, measurement, explanations of crime, societal reactions towards crime, the importance of research and the role of criminology in public policy. Through active discussions, groups work and individual assignments students are encouraged to think critically about the nature of crime and crime control.  

Professional Ethics for Sociologists
(3 ECTS credits)
The course rises the questions of moral values in Professional occupation. The course aims to increase moral sensitivity in research dealing with human subjects and to give understanding of ethical standards of sociological practice. Starting with general issues of misconduct in research and publication of results, relation between research approach and ethical stance, the course covers moral problems connected with privacy and confidentiality, informed consent and the use of deceptive techniques. Issues of resolution of conflicts of interest and the relation between Professional duty, loyalty and conscientious objection (whistleblowing) will be discussed. Students will be expected to discuss ethical dimension of the research methods used in their Bachelor research project.

Introduction to Social Anthropology
(3 ECTS credits)
The main purpose of the course is the development of the social sciences and humanities students' anthropological imagination, which (following the prominent sociologist Charles Wright Mills) means their active engagement in anthropological interpretation of everyday experiences – which, of course, should not happen only in the university class. The ability of anthropological imagination will be developed through examination of key theoretical concepts and methodological approaches of social anthropology in the lectures, home reading and film analysis, following the practical application of these knowledge while the students will have to design, do and present their own anthropological research in small groups.

Contemporary Sociological Theory
(6 ECTS credits)
This course is based on a selection of modern and contemporary sociological theories following on from the Classic Sociological Theory course in order to show how sociology has developed to reflect critically changing intellectual-interdisciplinary and socio-political contexts. The thematic focus is on the foundation and basic elements of epistemological-analytical continuum and normative-critical evaluation by mapping out and critically examine the major sociological theorists’ ideas, conceptual problems, basic presuppositions, propositions and analytical concepts.
 
Public Sector Economics
(4,5 ECTS credits)
Public sector economics is an area of study that is directly relevant to our everyday lives. The module surveys the economic literature in a number of major hot topics such as taxation, and the evaluation of public spending in areas such as public transport, education, and health and income distribution. This module examines the economic aspects of government intervention in the economy. It explains how the ‘invisible hand' of the market is tempered by the ‘visible hand' of government in the mixed economy of both private and public sectors adopted by the vast majority of nations.

Introduction to Sociological Research Methodology
(4,5 ECTS credits)
This course is aimed at introducing students to the process and main concepts of sociological research, variety of methods of data collection, explanation of differences between qualitative and quantitative methods of sociological research. Taking the course students will have a possibility to start developing their knowledge and skills how to carry out social research, assess data quality and present research results, they will learn how to prepare simple quantitative and qualitative research project, including definition of aims and objectives of research, selection of relevant methods of sampling and gathering of information, reflecting upon advantages and disadvantages of selected methods.

Social Policy
(4,5 ECTS credits)
Social policy studies the ways in which societies provide for the social needs of their members through structures and systems of distribution, redistribution, regulation, provision and empowerment. Students will understand the contribution to these processes from those who come from different value positions and different social, cultural and economic backgrounds. The course provides a clear and comprehensive overview of social policy developments in Lithuania with a detailed review of social, political, economic and international contexts.    

Sociology of Ethnic relations
(3 ECTS credits)
The aim of the course is to provide students with a comprehensive overview of the main developments in history and theory of nationalism and ethnicity: from the fundamental “pre-modernity vs. modernity” debate between Anthony Smith and Ernest Gellner to contemporary debates in sociology of nationalism and political philosophy. This course aims to provide students with an understanding of how contemporary sociologists have interpreted major civic and national changes in modernity and postmodernity, including the questions of globalism and localism, citizenship in an era of globalization, democratic citizenship in multiethnic states, the new debate over minority rights and liberal culturalism, human rights and ethnocultural justice, the conceptions of postnationalism and cosmopolitanism.

Qualitative Family Research Methods and Methodologies
(3 ECTS credits)
The course aims to introduce traditional and contemporary qualitative family research methods and methodologies and develop ability to conduct family research. Modern/postmodern thinking and qualitative tradition in family research would be discussed. Students would be able to analyze examples of application of different methodologies and research methods as well as develop ability to implement research project on the family related issues by means of two innovative mapping methods and conduct data analysis with MAXQDA program.

Urban Sociology
(4,5 ECTS credits)
The course is aimed at introducing students to the key topics of urban sociology such as urbanism and community, culture and the urban economy, the right to the city, images of good life and landscapes of power, sociological analysis of built environment, place, memory and the city, globalization and the urban change. The course will provide students with knowledge and skills necessary for analysis of such urban phenomena as community, diversity in the city, social mix, citizenship and new forms of urban marginalisation and exclusion, suburbia, gated communities, gentrification, defensible space, role of culture in urban economy.


POSTGRADUATE STUDY COURSES OF SOCIOLOGY AND CRIMINOLOGY

The aim of the postgraduate programme in Sociology and Criminology is to reinforce and develop the role and influence of science in the present and future society, to ensure quality studies guaranteeing the education of a competent, critical, responsible and ever-developing personality, to train scientists and specialists of the highest qualification who would be open to scientific innovations and the ever-changing challenges of the society and ready to participate in the local and international academic life with responsibility for Lithuanian culture and openness towards other cultures.
Courses renewed during the implementation of Internalization project:

Courses on Criminal Justice I and II
(12 ECTS credits)
Courses deal with both theoretical aspects of legal regulation of criminal justice (justification of punishment, theories of the general part of criminal law) and practical issues arising in criminal procedure, sentencing and execution of punishments. The students receive background knowledge on legal acts and jurisprudence of the Republic of Lithuania relative to the criminal justice as well as some comparative insights into corresponding legal norms of other states.

Criminological Theories (Theoretical Criminology II)
(6 ECTS credits)
The course provides students with an observation and critical examination of the major theoretical perspectives on crime, punishments, and other issues relevant to the criminal justice which have dominated Criminology during the period between the end of 18th century until nowadays. The contemporary relevance of classical theories will also be discussed. The role of criminological knowledge in the realm of criminal justice research and practice will also be considered. Throughout the lectures, emphasis will be placed on the conceptual and theoretical maps provided by the different legal, psychological, and sociological perspectives of deviance, crime and social control. In this light, course readings, lectures and class discussions will emphasize not only the content of theories, but also their academic, political, social and cultural contexts, as well as their practical implementation.

Methodology of Qualitative methods: Biographical Method
(6 ECTS credits)
Course students will become knowledgeable about the Biographical Method, methodology in life story research, how to collect and analyse Life stories. In this course students will have possibility to develop their knowledge in practice.

Psychology of Asocial Behaviour
(6 ECTS credits)
This course will provide the psychological understanding of asocial behaviour. Major psychological theories of asocial behaviour and research findings in this area are explored and compared. The course is divided into several topic areas including different forms of asocial behaviour, mechanisms underlying the development of asocial personality, as well as risk and protective factors, issues in prevention and treatment of offenders

Punishment and Resocialization
(6 ECTS credits)
Students of this course will be able to identify and analyse criminological problems such as punishment and reintegration aspect in various societies. In this course students will find diverse theoretical justifications for rehabilitation and the principles of effective practice: risk classification, criminogenic needs, responsivity, community base, treatment modality, programme integrity. So the Punishment and Resocialization course invite to understand not only theoretical aspects of punishment but practical as well.

Social Problems of Deviance
(6 ECTS credits)
The course aims to provide students with the comprehensive core knowledge of sociology of deviance. The discussion also focuses on the interplay between positivism and interactionism. The course invites students to develop their interpretative skills and sociological imagination. The course aims to train students to take a critical perspective on current issues in understanding deviance.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

WIT 3WIT - White Task Force on the development of skills of the social welfare professionals intends to improve the quality of services  provided to citizens through the creation of a European network for social innovation.

Its overall objective is to analyze the evolution of the system of social and health services in Europe,  so as to provide new and effective guidelines to support innovation in the organizational models  and the definition of vocational training courses  for operators in the sector.

PROJECT GOALS

WIT 4Project goals are:

- coordinate the analysis and scenario building on emerging trends  in order to facilitate the matching between demand and supply of new skills in the social work;

- analyze the impact of social innovation on the skills and competencies  of social workers, creating a European Atlas of innovation in social care professions;

- capitalize and disseminate best practices  on developing new skills and competencies for the White Jobs.

PROJECT PARTICIPANTS

WIT project involves public and development bodies next to research, university and training prominent institutions on the topic of social innovation, from 4 Member Countries (Italy, Bulgaria, Germany and Lithuania). The Province of Milan, leads the partnership composed of the National Development Agency (Bulgaria), Alice Salomon - University of Applied Sciences in Berlin (Germany) and Vilnius university, Faculty of Philosophy (Lithuania).
