The Faculty of Philosophy is unique within the Vilnius University (and Lithuania on the whole) by virtue of the variety of scientific disciplines convened in it, and therefore it can reasonably be called “a university within university”. This variety is reminiscent of the times when the terms “philosophy” and “science” had the same meaning.

From the historical point of view, one could say that entire Lithuanian science originates behind the walls of the Faculty of Philosophy at Vilnius University, because it is the oldest faculty of the oldest university in Lithuania. This is described in more detail in the article “Some Features of the History of the Faculty of Philosophy”, written by a long-time professor of our faculty Romanas Plečkaitis (1933-2009) as part of the book Vilnius University. Faculty of Philosophy. 1579-1989-2009, which was published when the Faculty together with Vilnius University was celebrating its 430th anniversary of birth and 20th anniversary of rebirth.

Currently research is carried out in the Faculty in three out of six science fields formally discerned in Lithuania (B000 – Biomedical Sciences, H000 – Humanities, S000 – Social Sciences). Around 80 scientists (17 of them – full professors as of 2012) are breaking the soil in the areas of philosophy, education science, psychology, social work, and sociology. They are assisted by more than 60 doctoral candidates, of whom around 15 successfully maintain their doctoral theses annually. The Faculty is the leader in the branches of philosophy, psychology, sociology in Lithuania, this fact also being testified by the independently implemented corresponding doctoral programs.

The scientific practice at the Faculty is based on the principles of academic freedom and responsibility, unity of studies and research, active participation in scientific community in Lithuania and abroad, responsibility for Lithuanian culture and openness to other cultures.
