Chiang Mai University (CMU) was founded in January 1964, under a Royal Charter granted by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. CMU is the first provincial university in Thailand and functions as a centre for academic and occupational knowledge in order to benefit the Northern region and Thailand.
Today Chiang Mai University offers bachelor, master and doctoral study programmes at its 21 faculties. CMU aims to become a 'Green and Healthy University', which promotes the development of sustainable economy, conducting research and innovations for excellence and serving academic services for society benefit, to train graduates, who have morale, quality and skills to be global citizen, to encourage education reform, promoting life-long learning.

The Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University (The Netherlands) on July 8, 2020, has ranked Chiang Mai University as the tenth ASEAN Top University in the category of publications submitted to academic databases and the number of citations these publications have received.
CMU STEM education research platform (CMU-STEM) Under TLIC
A STEM education research platform allows university staff working together to improve education, research and community services through STEM education and multidisciplinary activities.
The official establishment and inauguration of SMU-STEM is expected in Year 2021. It is planned as a structural subunit of Teaching and Learning Innovation Center (TLIC).
The Teaching and Learning Innovation Center (TLIC) was established in 2019. It is the result of Chiang Mai University’s commitment to respond to the education challenges of the 21st century and exceed new expectations in teaching and learning practices. The mission of the TLIC Centre is to promote:
- Digital Learning. Utilizing technology platforms that increase learning management, communication, and effectiveness of teaching and learning.
- Teaching and Learning Competency. Provide opportunities for training, support innovative teaching and learning through grants and publications, develop teaching and learning competencies through coaching.
- Outcome-based Learning. Establish new assessment goals and facilitate new approaches to student performance tracking and evaluation.
- Research and Innovation. Promote and facilitate learning innovation. Establish learning research and innovation as a core practice across university disciplines (https://tlic.cmu.ac.th)

CMU-STEM centre Activities 2020-2021
International conference. Chang Mai University held the EASTEM EC 2020 international conference (EASTEM-EC2020 (cmu.ac.th) in February, 2020, which was attended by representatives from 13 EASTEM project partner universities.
Virtual webinars. Virtual webinar series has been organised by CMU-STEM for university lecturers in Thailand: The main topics due to COVID-19 pandemic were related to online education: Overcoming Challenges in University-level online teaching; How to effectively conduct student-centered learning (SCL)-Based Online Classes; Strategies for Better Assessments of Online Learning.
These webinars were very popular among university About 3000 participants took part in the last virtual meeting in virtual Webinar series.
