Mahidol University is based in the Bangkok metropolitan area in Thailand. Mahidol University (MU) has its origins in the establishment of Siriraj Hospital in 1888 by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn (Rama V), and the hospital’s medical school is the oldest institution in Thailand, granting its first medical degree in 1893. It has become the University of Medical Sciences in 1943. In 1969 it was renamed by H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej , after his Royal Father, H.R.H Prince Mahidol of Songkla , who is widely known as the ‘Father of Modern Medicine and Public Health in Thailand‘.
Since then Mahidol University has developed into one of the most prestigious universities in Thailand, internationally known and recognized for the high caliber of research and teaching by its faculty, and its outstanding achievements in teaching, research, international academic collaboration and professional services. This diversified institution now offers top quality programs in numerous social and cultural disciplines, including the most doctoral programs of any institution in Thailand, yet has maintained its traditional excellence in medicine and the sciences.
The university originally focuses on health sciences but has expanded to other fields in recent decades. There are a total of 629 programs offered by 17 faculties, 6 colleges and 9 research institutions. Its international college runs a number of courses in English within the fields of engineering, environment and resources, information and communication studies, liberal arts, medical technology, nursing, physical therapy, social sciences and humanities, and veterinary sciences.
The overall philosophy of Mahidol University is best captured by the university motto: Attānaṁ upamaṁ kare อตฺตานํ อุปมํ กเร In the Pali language, this translates as the Golden Rule in English: ‘Do unto others as you would have others do unto you’. This underlying theme pervades every aspect of Mahidol University as it endeavours to imbue graduates with the conviction that, aside from achieving academic excellence, they have a solemn duty to improve the quality of life for all humanity. MUSC Centre for Excellence in STEM Education
The STEM Centre of Mahidol University, established on October 16, 2019), had an official inauguration ceremony On November 14th, 2019, during which Assoc. Prof. Sittiwat Lertsiri, Dean of MU Faculty of Science (MUSC), presided over the opening ceremony of “MUSC Centre for Excellence in STEM Education” at Faculty of Science, Salaya Campus.
MUSC Centre of Excellence in STEM Education is a functional unit of the university where a group of people work together to improve STEM education, research and community services through multidisciplinary activities followed the policy of Thailand National policy on STEM education, as well as to support the EASTEM network by prepare necessary infrastructure, human resources, and collaborative activities among MU staff, Thai STEM network (CMU and PSU) and EASTEM International network.

To become a hub & platform for improving education, research and linkage to industry in an integrated environment of Science, Engineering, Technology, Art, and Mathematics in Thailand; to be a vehicle of increasing the employability of university graduates.
Main aims/objectives of the STEM Centre
MUSC Centre of Excellence in STEM Education was established with the aim to promote STEM education that integrates knowledge from four fields: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in Thailand, in order to increase the number of STEM graduates, meeting the demands of industry in the 21st century. The objectives to be addressed are as follows: To stimulate pedagogical innovation in STEM education and to improve STEM education of all specific target groups; to train future assessors of STEM education (faculty members, K-12 teachers) and to foster inter and cross disciplinary cooperation within the university, with industry, STEM regional partners and K-12 schools (for more information see https://science.mahidol.ac.th/eastem/).
