Udayana University (UNUD)
In the beginning of the 1960s, the people of Bali aspired to have a Tertiary Institution on the island. In order to realize this aspiration, on May 12th, 1961, several figures from the educational sector, government, and community leaders conducted a conference led by Prof. Dr. Purbatjaraka, and assisted by Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra as secretary.
The conference discussed the steps required for the preparation of the establishment of a tertiary institution in Bali. An agreement was also reached for the formation of a committee led by Dr. Anak Agung Made Djelantik, Head of the Board of Health in Bali, with a team of eight members.
By a decision of the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia, Udayana University (UNUD) was officially founded in August 17, 1962. Initially UNUD consisted of four faculties: Letters, Medicine, Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, Education and Teacher Training. The Faculty of Letters was actually established on 29th September 1958, at that time it was a subsidiary of the Faculty of Letters of Airlangga University in Surabaya (East Java). This Faculty was then integrated into Udayana University in 1962. Since establishment UNUD has rapidly developed and by the year of 2017 the University has had 13 faculties, Faculty of Marine and Fisheries is the newest, established in 2011.
The Ministry of Education of Republic of Indonesia in its publication “Promising Universities of Indonesia” lists Udayana University as one of the 50 leading universities of today, out of nearly 2.500 higher education institutions around the country. Udayana University seeks to become a leading university that produces high potential graduates, who become the best in their generation.
Udayana University vision as stated in the 2017 University Statute is to become an excellent, self-reliant and culture-oriented university. To achieve similar perception and understanding of the direction of a long-term development of university for the academic and administrative staff, as well as the students (civitas academica).
STEM Centre of Udayana University
The Stem Centre is still in an ad hoc committee. Its establishment is planned within the already existing university infrastructure as a new subunit under Udayana University Education Centre. Its official opening is postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic, it will be held in 2021. UDUN STEM centre has started its activities by targeting lecturers of Udayana University to be able to apply STEM-based education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and involve two faculties including the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Agriculture Technology as the initial pilot project for the implementation of STEM Education at Udayana University. There were STEM related and Blended Learning – SCL trainings organised for members of STEM Consortium in Indonesia and Lecturers from Faculty of Natural Sciences and Faculty of Agriculture Technology.
The key persons of the STEM centre management team are: Prof. Ir I Made Supartha Utama, M.S, Ph.D ( ); Dewa Ayu Swastini, S.F, M.Farm, Apt ( ); Agus Muliantara, S.Kom, M.Kom ().
The managerial and operational staff (activities coordinators) training organised by the centre is focused on TEAM WORK (Together, Everybody, Achieves, More) and is aimed at giving the knowledge of how to create an Effective Team.
The STEM centre aims to promote Student-Centered Learning in STEM education; to stimulate pedagogical innovation in STEM education; to train future mentors of STEM education (faculty members, K-12 teachers), to foster inter and cross disciplinary cooperation within the university, with industry, STEM regional partners and K-12 schools. Also to create STEM courses for each specific target group and objective, so as to improve the capabilities of lecturers, students, school teachers and K-12 students in STEM learning by prioritizing creative thinking, innovative thinking, active thinking, and collaborative thinking, in multidiscipline courses and to provide community services (STEM based Projects for the society) in Bali district.
