The lecture will introduce recent developments in social neuroscience and emerging approaches to the more objective measurement of therapeutic change. Drawing on psychotherapy, interpersonal theory, affective science, memory reconsolidation, and systems and computational neuroscience, Dr Lane will explore how corrective emotional experiences can update deeply rooted relational memories and internal working models, making interpersonal representations more flexible and adaptive.
All welcome who is interested in the science and practice of psychotherapy, including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, psychotherapy trainees, researchers, early-career researchers, and students.

Richard D. Lane is a clinical psychiatrist and psychodynamic psychotherapist whose research bridges psychological theory, neuroscience, and clinical practice. He was among the first researchers to conduct functional neuroimaging studies of emotion in the 1990s and has continued to investigate emotion, emotional awareness, neurovisceral integration, and the interaction between memory and emotion in psychotherapy.
He is the author of more than 220 scientific papers and book chapters, and his work has received more than 49,000 citations. He has received numerous awards for teaching and mentoring, including the 2024 Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Psychosomatic Society. In 2023, he was the Fulbright-Freud Visiting Lecturer in Psychoanalysis at the Sigmund Freud Museum in Vienna.
