Dreaming of Elsewhere: Indonesia’s Digital Migration Imaginary through #KaburAjaDulu
The lecture examines how Indonesian youth articulate migration not merely as a legal or economic decision, but as an affective and cultural response to precarity, stagnation, and blocked futures. Focusing on the viral hashtag #KaburAjaDulu (“Just Run Away First”) on X (formerly Twitter), the research explores how digital platforms function as spaces where migration is imagined, negotiated, and emotionally narrated.
Rather than signalling a definitive rejection of the homeland, the hashtag reflects a temporal and affective withdrawal – a way of preserving aspiration when meaningful reform appears unattainable in the present. Drawing on qualitative discourse analysis, the lecture discusses themes such as emotional exhaustion, desire for recognition, and the rejection of nationalist meritocratic promises. By situating Indonesia within broader debates on non-Western migration regimes, postcolonial governance, and youth mobility, the lecture invites reflection on migration as a way of reimagining the self in relation to uncertain futures.
