On how imagination shapes belief

Apie paskaitą:

In contemporary philosophy, a popular view holds that imagination influences our attitudes in a rational way only if it is subject to certain constraints. However, it remains unclear whether these constraints are inherent to imagination itself or arise from other mental faculties, such as perception or reasoning. Consequently, what appears to be the rational contribution of imagination may, in fact, be the result of and depend on these other faculties. The aim of this lecture is to explore the challenges to the independent role of imagination without reducing it to the influence of other mental processes and to propose possible approaches for achieving this.

Imagination’s fit for desire

Apie paskaitą:

This paper explores the normative structure of sensory imagination in the formation of desire. Whereas perceptual content unfolds in response to external stimuli—justifying beliefs through a mind-to-world direction of fit shared by both perception and belief—imaginative content unfolds in accordance with the agent’s internal commitments, aligning it with desire in terms of its world-to-mind direction of fit. As a result, imaginings can specify how something ought to be desired, thereby justifying new, more determinate desires. In light of this, I analyze the ways in which imagination can play a conative role in shaping our desires.
