Mizrahi Feminists of Color and Israel’s Wars on Gaza
What is the relevance of gender justice activism to Israel’s war on Gaza and Israel’s foreign policy? What is the relationship between Israel’s Mizrahi majority, Mizraḥi feminists, and Israel’s political shift to the alt-right? Mizraḥi grassroot social movements fall into silence when the Israel-Palestine conflict dominates the international media headlines. The lecture connects intra-Jewish racial and gendered dynamics to the 2014 Gaza War.

From the celebrated beautiful image of the traditional representative of classical dance to the extreme exaggeration of femininity, portrayed in the Bollywood item numbers – women in the Indian dance scenario exist together in time and space; however, that is all that they share. The category is not an all-encompassing one, but is instead made up of disparate positions in the public sphere.

During this public lecture, Aizada Arystanbek will discuss the Russian Invasion of Ukraine from a Critical Feminist perspective by exploring the issues of Russian imperialism, connecting media bias of the war coverage with Eurocentric notions of modernity and civilization, and situating the conflict within a broader regional perspective that centers experiences of Central Asia.
