Apie paskaitą:

Ever since Plato and Aristotle, philosophers have shown a continuing interest in the question of whether literature can be a source of knowledge and understanding. Contemporary philosophers known as literary cognitivists have defended the epistemic value of literature and have developed various views on how the cognitive content of literature can be understood, i.e., what sort of knowledge and understanding literature provides. This paper presents some of these ways, but it also identifies a particular deficiency in the current discussion. Where does literature derive the great cognitive and epistemic significance literary cognitivists have attributed to it? Why should readers form any sorts of beliefs, conceptions, perspectives or emotional stances based on literary works? I argue that a promising answer might lie in the epistemic virtues exemplified by authors’ creative work and the literary works they lead to.
